Union pressure was behind water referendum U-turn
The Government’s U-turn on a water referendum was sparked by union pressure over the transfer of 3,500 water service workers, it has emerged.
The original plan was to move the water service workers from 31 separate councils into Irish Water by 2025. But last year, Irish Water announced plans to speed up this process and bring all the workers over by 2021.
