Galway won out over other locations to be European Capital of Culture in 2020, hosting a major year-long programme of hundreds of events, performances and initiatives 'which will leave the West of Ireland transformed', organisers promise

Commitments on close to €20 million of the €45.7 million needed by Galway to run one of the biggest cultural events in the world are still to be secured, organisers have said.
