Pima County, which covers about one third of Arizona’s border with Mexico, is one of the most brutally inhospitable places in the United States. Its total land surface is around 9,200 square miles. Of that just two miles – 0.02 per cent - is water; in the south-west corner, man-made lakes built to service the Green Valley copper mines are as desiccated as the land around them, save for a couple of murky puddles.
