Miraculously calm and sunny weather graced the National Ploughing Championships last week as a record-breaking 297,000 people descended on the annual farming celebration in Carlow. But by Wednesday afternoon, at the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) stand, there was a storm brewing.

Angry beef farmers ambushed top IFA executives on their own turf, lambasting them for the low price of cattle and the IFA’s role in the recent beef talks.
