Sunday Business Post writers honoured for outstanding journalism

Tom Lyons, Susan Mitchell and Fearghal O'Connor scoop top prizes at 2016 Journalism Awards

The NewsBrands Ireland Journalism Awards 2016 yesterday honoured three Sunday Business Post writers for the excellence of their work.

The Sunday Business Post scooped plaudits in the two main business categories.

Deputy editor Tom Lyons (pictured above) won the award for business journalist of the year.

Tom beat the competition for his exclusive interview withformer Anglo Irish banker David Drumm from his jail cell in Boston. The judges' citation described him as an economic archaeologist, steering us through the 'Jurassic drama' of the past eight years.

Public affairs editor Fearghal O'Connor lifted the prize for business story of the year with his report onthe 200 Dublin families facing eviction after Goldman Sachs snapped up the €89m debt of a property developer. The judges praised his account of the plight of the families and the deal that now sees them facing eviction.

Health editor Susan Mitchell lifted the trophy for feature writer of the year for herinsight into the inner workings of the HSE. The judges praised her for tackling difficult and sensitive stories "in a manner that was both authoritative and moving".
