State to use secret claims data to slash whiplash payouts

The insurance industry has agreed to hand over new unpublished figures on accident claims to a working group investigating Ireland’s compensation culture.

The Personal Injuries Commission (PIC) says it has received a “significant amount of data” from Insurance Ireland in recent weeks, which will allow it to benchmark the average value of soft tissue injuries, such as whiplash, against similar claims in Britain and the rest of Europe.
