How Ireland turned its national day into a global phenomenon

This weekend's St Patrick's Festival could bring up to €100m into the economy, according to some estimates. The festival has come of age as it celebrates its 21st year after rebranding in 1996.

Last year a total of 105,000 visitors travelled into the country for the festival, spending an average of 8.8 days in Ireland and 6.5 days in Dublin. In 2015 visitors generated €73m for the country as a whole, spending €51.3m in Dublin.
