The banking inquiry last week proved there was no such thing as the Night of the Bank Guarantee. The narrative around that singular night has entered into the realm of mythology. Such is our obsession with September 29, 2008, that we now know what colour ties the bankers wore, John Gormley’s bedtime routine and that NTMA’s Brendan McDonagh was watching the Dow Jones index tanking by 700 points as he waited in a side room while the “decision” was made.
