Smugglers in hot water as Revenue pulls plug on hot tub scam
Revenue officers in Rosslare Europort seized over 681,000 smuggled cigarettes at the weekend.
The load, which arrived from Cherbourg in a Lithuanian-registered truck was identified as suspicious in routine profiling by Revenue.
The scanner was deployed and the contraband was discovered hidden in a number of hot tubs.
The driver in his 20s, was questioned and later released.
The cigarettes represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €285,000.
