Six times the money in ‘sick cert’ fees to GPs
Higher numbers are a result of change to new scan-ready certs
GPs have been given a sixfold increase in payments for issuing ‘sick certs’ to workers, it has emerged.
There are around 50,000 workers on sick leave per year, and the scheme costs the state €600 million annually in illness benefit payments.
GPs were previously getting €8.25 for submitting weekly medical certificates for workers on sick leave, but that has now increased to €50 for one-time-only certificates since the start of last month.
