Simon Coveney, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, welcomed the election of Justice Síofra O’Leary as President of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). O’Leary, who has been vice-president of the court since January, is to take up the three-year role in November. She succeeds Iceland’s Robert Spano in the position. O’Leary was proposed as Ireland’s judge at the ECHR and elected for a nine-year term in 2015.
