Significant potential for Ireland to increase mineral mining, academic says

Zinc exports in particular could add significant value to the exchequer, Professor Murray Hitzman says

Europe and Ireland have the potential to meet the mining needs of green technology used to decarbonise the economy, a leading UCD academic has said.

“Europe, including Ireland, has potential for almost every one of the metallic elements that we need to decarbonise, the potential is there,” said professor Murray Hitzman, director of iCrag, UCD’s research centre in applied geosciences, and a former associate director for energy and minerals of the US Geological Survey.
