Scouting Ireland could be facing as many as 40 fresh civil cases related to child abuse in the new year – the cost of which many members fear could “sink” the organisation.

The organisation has been at the centre of a growing crisis over child sex abuse, both historical and new, and last week it emerged that a trawl of its internal files had uncovered 317 alleged child abuse victims and 212 alleged abusers.
