Michael D Higgins has given a number of sketchy answers about his financial allowance, but most voters don’t seem to give a hoot

The first six-way TV debate of the presidential election was one-third of the way through when Pat Kenny began reeling off the candidates’ historic party connections.

He noted that the incumbent, President Michael D Higgins, had the support of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Labour, before the president piped up: “And the Green Party and the Social Democrats and many others who are non-party, I am very grateful to say.”
