The €2.6 billion cost of transferring ownership of the electricity network from the ESB to Eirgrid scuppered plan

The body representing ESB shareholders was heavily involved in the campaign to prevent the ESB losing control of the electricity network, documents obtained under Freedom of Information show.

Under the current system, the network of power lines is still owned by the ESB, but is operated by Eirgrid to ensure that all power companies have equal access to it.
