Web Summit chief Paddy Cosgrave on the housing crisis, regulating the tech industry and how he struck a €110m deal with Portugal

It is a Wednesday morning in Lisbon, and I am in a taxi with Web Summit chief Paddy Cosgrave on our way to the 20,000-capacity Altice arena. In about an hour he will share a stage with the Mayor of Lisbon, Fernando Medina, and Portuguese prime minister António Costa to make the biggest announcement of his career. The bootstrapped business he founded with friends in Dublin back in 2009 has locked down investment of €110 million from the Portuguese government, and hitched what is now one of the world’s biggest tech conferences to the city of Lisbon for the next ten years.
