Fianna Fáil is pushing for a retired senior judge to chair the new judicial appointments commission.
Justice spokesman Jim O'Callaghan said the proposal, one of a number being tabled by the party at committee stage, was “to get around” the government's plans to introduce a lay majority and lay chair under the controversial bill.
