Property tax overhaul delayed by Ross’s demand to exempt pensioners

‘Small decreases’ for some home owners under new regime

The overhaul of the property tax has been delayed, due to demands from Minister for Transport Shane Ross for an exemption for pensioners.

The government has worked out a new system to avoid steep rises in property tax for homeowners, when houses are revalued next year for the first time since the tax’s introduction.

Homeowners will pay different property tax rates depending on where they live, instead of the current single national rate.
