There was a critical reaction to Pope Francis’s speech from abuse survivors, who had hoped that he would announce details of measures to crack down on Church figures who committed or facilitated sexual abuse against children

Pope Francis has hit out at the “betrayal of trust” by clerical sex abusers as Taoiseach Leo Varadkar promised a new chapter in Church-state relations. The Pope promised that he would work to “remedy past mistakes” and adopt “stringent” measures to ensure that the scandals of the past were not repeated.
