As another construction boom gathers speed, it has emerged that the vast majority of Dublin Fire Brigade’s safety requirements for new buildings have been successfully contested by property developers. What will it mean for the safety of residents?

Ireland is in the middle of a construction boom, and nowhere is busier than Dublin, with the city’s skyline dotted with cranes.

Under planning law, every new development or major expansion on those sites needs a fire safety certificate – essentially a statement from the local planning authority that the development meets all the fire safety codes.
