Households will be refunded money they unknowingly paid in energy bills that were used to subsidise big companies for more than 12 years, according to the state’s energy regulator.

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) told the Oireachtas environment committee today that an “administrative error” had meant the ESB charged customers more than it should have as part of a 2010 government arrangement that subsidised big businesses’ energy costs by charging domestic customers more.
