Over 2,000 businesses have shut so far this year

A significant number of indicators show that Ireland could soon face a recession

Around 2,000 businesses have ceased trading so far this year, according to new statistics.

The figures are based on legally-binding returns made to the Companies Registration Office by firms that are ceasing trading under their registered business name.

They show the largest number of business closures have been in Dublin (821), followed by Cork (168), Kildare (110) and Galway (101).
