New law will stop prisoners getting state pensions in jail

Minister for Social Protection Regina Doherty is preparing a new law to prevent prisoners from getting state pensions while they are locked up.
The Supreme Court ruled last year that a 76-year-old rapist was entitled to get his state contributory pension while he was in jail. It granted him €10,000 in damages.
However, Doherty is drafting a new law to allow the state to halt the payment of pensions to such prisoners.
