New broadcasting charge is off agenda before election

Communications minister Alex White has said that it is “unlikely” that the new broadcasting charge will be implemented during the government’s term in office.

The charge had been due to be introduced in January to replace the traditional €160 television licence, meaning that those with only tablets and smartphones would also have to pay.
