More than half of renters in the State rely on government aid to afford costs – ESRI

Latest data from economic think tank finds that amount of households receiving support for housing costs has doubled since 1994

More than half (54 per cent) of renters in the state rely on government support in order to afford their accommodation, according to a new research report published by the Economic and Social Research Institute.

In total, the number of households in receipt of supports has more than doubled from almost 135,000 in 1994 to almost 294,000 in 2020, amounting of 16 per cent of households overall, the ESRI said.
