Moneypoint fires up coal generators to offset power shortage

National supply will become increasingly tight as old plants are retired and before renewables are scaled up, sources say

The tight supply last week meant that all available thermal electricity generators on the island were needed to meet demand, including Moneypoint’s three coal-powered generators.

All three coal-fired power generators have been employed at Moneypoint power station following an alert over tight electricity supply in Ireland early last week, just six months after two large power generators were switched off in the midlands, the Business Post can reveal.
