Authorities are assessing the damage of the powerful category five storm
One of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded has reached land in Mexico.
Category five, Hurricane Patricia lashed western Mexico with rain and winds of up to 165 mph, causing damage in coastal towns and knocking down trees and power lines.
However, the storm has weakened significantly this morning since reaching land and has been downgraded to a category two storm. It has now decreased to about 75 mph US National Hurricane Centre.
