McRedmond named new An Post chief executive

Former head of TV3 will lead firm through 'challenging' environment

David McRedmond left TV3 last year

An Post has announced the appointment of former TV3 chief executive David McRedmond as its new chief executive.

He replaces Donal Connell, who retired recently. A statement from theState-owned postal company said McRedmond would take up the role at the beginning of October for a seven-year term. Prior to TV3, McRedmond was commercial director of Eircom.

In a statement, An Post chairman Dermot Divilly said McRedmond would be leading the company through a "challenging industry and technology environment" in the years ahead. "I have been impressed by his ability to lead transformational change in companies across several adjacent sectors such as retailing, telecoms and media," Divilly added.

McRedmond said An Post was a much-loved brand with a magnificent history. "My job will be to ensure its future is as bright as its past, meeting the seismic market changes head-on with boldness and creativity," he said.

The new An Post chiefleft TV3 last year following the sale of the commercial TV station by Doughty Hanson to UPC Ireland, now Virgin Media Ireland, which is under the Liberty Global umbrella.

An Post announced growth in profits earlier this year but expressed concern about the losses incurred in delivering its universal service obligation. It has also had to cope with a 35 per cent fall in mail volumes since 2007.
