McConalogue: national dairy herd numbers must stabilise

The Minister for Agriculture says his department would only consider cap on dairy cattle numbers as ‘a last resort’

The size of the country’s national dairy herd cannot grow beyond its current level to ensure climate action targets are met, Charlie McConalogue has said.

The Agriculture Minister said his department was committed to stabilising the size of the dairy herd, but added that he would only legislate to reintroduce a cap on its size as a last resort. Such a move would mean an effective return to milk production quotas.
