Independent News & Media spent two full days in the High Court last week, fighting desperately to prevent inspectors entering its doors at the behest of the ODCE. At stake: the media group’s share price, its day-to-day operations, and ultimately its reputation

The operative word was “damage”. Reputational damage, damage to shareholders, damage to the share price, damage to over 800 staff. Damage to day-to-day business operations.

Over the course of the two-day hearing, in which Independent News & Media (INM) sought to deliver a knock-out blow to the corporate watchdog’s move to have High Court inspectors appointed to the media group, damage got namechecked at least 40 times, maybe more.
