Joy at Pope Francis’s visit reflects an Ireland of two Churches

The current pontiff’s popularity derives from his rejection of the trappings of the scandal-riven institution

One in eleven Irish Catholics living on the island of Ireland will be in the Phoenix Park for the Papal Mass this day week. All of the 500,000 tickets for Pope Francis’s penultimate event in Ireland have been sold out. So too have the 250,000 tickets for the Pope’s visit to Knock, the World Meeting of Families events at the RDS and the ‘Festival of Families’ in Croke Park.
