Iarnród Eireann has dropped plans to retrofit old carriages to ease commuter misery.

Around 28 former train carriages have been lying idle in the company’s Inchicore Works headquarters for the past six years.

They were taken out of service during the recession with the aim of re-introducing them when demand picked up again.
