Official figures for August show a resilient performance from Irish exports, with a record monthly surplus, after a sharp drop in the July figures sparked fears about the impact of Brexit on trade with Britain.

The Central Statistics Office said seasonally adjusted exports in August were up 16 per cent from July to just under €10.3 billion. This followed a drop of 11 per cent in July in the aftermath of Britain's vote to leave the EU, which triggered a sharp fall in sterling. The drop in sterling, which has continued,is a worry for Irish exporters as it makes Irish goods more expensive.
