Irish authorities were told gas flow could drop by 12% if Russia cuts supply to EU

Gazprom’s failure to bring the Nord Stream 1 pipeline back online last Friday has given rise to fears across Europe that a full-scale cut-off from Russian gas may already be underway

Dmitry Peskov, President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, blamed “collective west” sanctions on the reduced Russian gas deliveries and said full gas flows wouldn’t return until sanctions were lifted. Picture: Getty

A full cut-off of Russian gas to the European Union this winter could result in a 12 per cent reduction of gas flows on the islands of Britain and Ireland, the UK National Grid told Irish authorities earlier this year.

It comes as Gazprom failed to bring the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline back online last Friday, leading to fears across Europe that a full-scale cut-off from Russian gas this winter is an increasing prospect.
