American tech multinationals Yahoo and Google have responded to a call by Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald for submissions on reforming Ireland’s defamation laws.

In written submissions, the internet titans strongly urge that liability for defamatory material online must fall on individual internet users rather than hosts or “intermediaries” who, in Google’s words, “should not be forced to police the internet”.
