The Citizens Assembly has recommended by an overwhelming majority that there be a referendum on the future of the Eighth Amendment, the constitutional ban on abortion.

The constitutional forum set up by the government to consider the issue voted by 79 to 12 not to retain the current wording of article 40.3.3 of the Constitution which states that the right to life of the unborn is equal to that of the mother.
