Halligan aims to double the number of female apprentices

Minister of State John Halligan is planning to double the number of women taking up construction apprenticeships, after it emerged that they account for just 6 per cent of the sector.

A recent report by state training agency Solas found that some young women were told at school that “apprenticeships are not for girls”. Men account for 94 per cent of the 5,035 people currently on apprenticeship courses.
