Government muted at news of Castro’s passing

Taoiseach Enda Kenny - and many of his ministers - declined to comment

There was a muted response from the Irish government to the death of the former Cuban leader Fidel Castro this weekend, aged 90.

President Michael D Higgins praised the Cuban revolutionary, saying he would “be remembered as a giant among global leaders”. But there was a noticeably more restrained reaction from the Fine Gael-led minority government. Taoiseach Enda Kenny, and many of his ministers, declined to comment.
