The blast happened on the outskirts of Bunbeg in the county’s Gaeltacht region.
The area was evacuated and local diversions put in place.
Gardaí, the National Ambulance Service and the Donegal Fire Brigade attended.
The Irish Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal was also requested.
The incident has been referred to the Health and Safety Authority.
