The gap between rich and poor is widening with eight men owning as much wealth as the 3.6 billion people who make up the poorer half of the world's population, according to a new report from Oxfam.

The report was published the day before the global economic and political elite gather for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss ski resort of Davos. Oxfam said that since 2015the richest one per cent of the world's population has owned more wealth that the other 99 per cent combined and the growing concentration of wealth at the top is holding back progress in ending global poverty.
