Galway to be European Capital of Culture
City beats two Irish rivals to host 2020 event
Galway is to be European Capital of Culture in 2020, after beating off competition from Limerick and a Three Sisters bid which included Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny.
The announcement was made by the European Commission this morning.
Galway will be the third Irish city to host the event, after Dublin in 1991 and Cork in 2005. Ireland and Croatia are the two EU countries entitled to host it in 2020.
