The special liquidator of the former Anglo Irish Bank has begun legal action against the bank’s former director Patrick Whelan, seeking repayment of between €5 million and €6 million.

In turn, court filings show, Whelan is suing Anglo Irish Bank’s former solicitors Matheson in relation to legal advice given to him and other directors ahead of the unwinding of contracts for difference positions taken by businessman Sean Quinn against the bank’s shares.
