Farmers and drivers face penalties under new ‘carbon budget’

The setting of the targets for sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by millions of tons will be politically controversial because there is currently just one single national emissions reduction target

The farming and transport sectors are set to face penalties if they do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions under a new “carbon budget” system.

The public sector, industry and housing sectors will also face the same legally binding targets and penalties as part of the plan to reduce emissions to stave off huge fines for the state.
