Facebook fined €1.2bn, ordered to halt EU-US data transfers

Penalty easily eclipses the previous record €746m fine levied by EU regulators on Amazon in July 2021

Facebook has been fined a record €1.2 billion by the Data Protection Commission (DPC) and ordered to halt data transfers from the European Union to the US within five months.

The fine, which comes on the week that marks the fifth anniversary of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), easily eclipses the previous record €746 million penalty levied on Amazon by EU regulators in July 2021.
