Eurostat checks asylum figures after Business Post reveals major data discrepancies

The department said the disparity was due to a delay in decisions made by its international protection office being signed off by the ministerial decisions unit

Eurostat is reviewing the figures it has received from the Department of Justice on the number of applicants granted asylum here following the publication of a report in this newspaper.

Last month, The Sunday Business Post revealed major discrepancies between the figures the department was sending to Eurostat and those produced by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
