Canada’s trade minister concluded yesterday that she might have to leave Brussels empty handed. Ceta, a proposed free-trade agreement that would eliminate 98 per cent of tariffs between Canada and the EU, was formally blocked by Belgium’s Walloon parliament late last week, after weeks of indications that the deal’s impact on social and environmental laws would prove a sticking point for the region.
