Energy woes for Microsoft data centre

American computer giant Microsoft has been criticised for its plans for a data centre that could draw the same power as 150,000 three-bed homes annually from the national grid.

Microsoft is currently building the enormous data centre in Clondalkin, west Dublin, and has recently applied for temporary planning permission for an 18-megawatt gas-powered electricity generator to tide it over while EirGrid upgrades the electricity network in the area.
