In contrast to the attitudes of the wider public many economists are opposed to pay hikes for Gardaí, teachers and nurses

The views of Ireland’s highest-profile economic experts on public sector pay hikes differ entirely from those of ordinary voters, according to polls carried out by this newspaper.

Almost half of Irish economists, 44 per cent, would not support full public sector pay restoration even in an unlikely utopian scenario whereby it could be achieved without affecting tax cuts or spending on public services.

That lack of support contrasted sharply to the more than 80 per cent support level among the wider public for pay hikes in the public sector, revealed by an opinion poll in last week’sSunday Business Post.
