Criminal suspects are getting free legal aid of up to €38,000 to try to keep their assets beyond the reach of the Criminal Assets Bureau.

The money is being used to pay for barristers, solicitors, forensic accounts and expert witnesses to mount their defence. The board paid out a total of €327,000 last year in free legal aid to 20 criminal suspects who were being pursued by CAB.
