Dismay for government as support falls away again

The marriage referendum is tightening, but the Yes side still enjoys a big lead. Meanwhile, Sinn Féin remains the coming force in Irish politics

The rise in coalition support was politically vital for the two parties – and especially for Labour – and was greeted with huge relief by their respective leaderships. As TDs began to focus on their own re-election efforts, prompted in part by selection conventions and discussions on constituency strategies, the rising polls gave them some degree of confidence that the re-election of the government (and their own re-election, more importantly) was not impossible. That confidence will take a mighty wallop today, and there will be political fallout from it.
